Learning how to speak Spanish is not difficult. But it does require a sensible approach. So many people try, and yet they fail miserably at learning how to speak Spanish! Why is this?

The first question to ask is why you are trying to learn Spanish in the first place! Apart from students at school or college taking Spanish classes for exams, most people who are learning the language are doing so for conversational purposes. They are learning to speak Spanish so that they can hold conversations. Perhaps with family or relatives, or perhaps for an upcoming trip! Whatever the reason, their goal is conversational Spanish and not technically correct academic Spanish.

In many cases, they fail because they take an academic approach to a non-academic problem. Strangely, taking an academic approach is the worst way to go about learning how to speak Spanish. An academic approach will teach you all about verbs and conjugation. An academic approach is great for expanding vocabulary. But an academic approach falls short when it comes to holding conversations.

You really need a more natural approach for leaning Spanish at the conversational level. You need much more exposure to sentence structure and conversational scenarios.

So while the failure rate sits at about 85% overall, those who take a more natural approach have much higher success rates. That’s correct, only about one in eight who start out generally succeed at learning Spanish in spoken form.

The more natural approach involves real or simulated immersion in spoken Spanish from the very beginning of the learning Spanish endeavor. The most practical way to get this much-needed exposure is to use an online Spanish course that includes effective audio modules.

This can be supplemented using other forms of immersion as well. These are freely available and really help. Listen to Spanish radio! Watch Spanish TV! When you are watching a DVD, watch the Spanish language version with English sub-titles and follow along. You will be amazed at how much real Spanish you pick up, as long as you have used the online Spanish course to give you some basics.

Not all courses are effective, so you need to be careful in your selection. You have to make certain that the audio components of the course will give you the right type of immersion. Audio tool to help you pronounce individual words are sometimes billed as immersion, but that is not the type of immersion which is effective!

Learning Spanish is not hard. The only hard part is carefully choosing an effective approach. Get that right and learning how to speak Spanish is a breeze!

Spanish learning has been given a substantial leap forward by iPhone apps. Making hardly any progress with tedious books and overpriced software courses has been overtaken by the quick progress you can make with the new technology. Apps allow to learn whenever and wherever you want. This means easy progress.

It also means that you can learn Spanish while you commute, cook, walk the dog, wait in a queue or even in the bath.

Learning a new language with apps is an enjoyable experience, or it should be. Good Spanish apps are a great motivation for learning, and noticeably raise your proficiency level.

What makes a Spanish learning app good? Which features should it contain?

Good apps are always produced by experienced tutors. They teach you Spanish in a practical way through audio recordings made by native speakers, regardless of the content. They can be sets of lessons, exercises, a quiz app, a kids’ course or a grammar manual. They must always include audio files, which are essential for developing your speaking and understanding skills.

There are other features a good Spanish learning app must contain. To help you save time and reduce the use of a dictionary to the minimum, it must give you Spanish transcripts of the lessons, as well as English translations. Ideally, it will also offer you a generous amount of content, a good design and an intuitive navigation.

There is a wealth of Spanish learning apps on the market. Choosing the right one for you is not simple, but access to free samples can be of great help. Sadly, there are many apps that do not show you any samples, but some do, and they are often the best.

Good Spanish apps will also offer you the chance to contact the course creator, request new features, ask technical queries, and they will undoubtedly bring out regular software upgrades.

The Spanish Podcasts for Beginners App that I have created offers you these and many other features like: a new mp3 or video every week; pdf transcripts of the dialogs, vocabulary, grammar and drills; on and offline listening, mp3 and video downloads, and more.

What could be more convenient than learning Spanish on your iPhone? In fact, there are apps out there for almost everything you need, from getting cheap auto insurance quotes, to learning languages, to playing games.

There can be little doubt that learning Spanish is a necessity for all those involved in the health care profession. Often caring for patients is a matter of effective communication. This means that if you can’t communicate with your patients, important factors about their illnesses, concerns and issues may very well not be addressed.

In just a few years, the United States will have the second largest Spanish speaking population in the world. In fact, only Mexico will have more Spanish speakers. These statistics have obvious implications for all American health care workers.

Hospital administrators are quickly realizing that they must have their organizations prepared for this new and emerging reality. More and more, hospitals are requiring their staff to speak some Spanish. This type of requirement is increasing common for health care workers who are working in the emergency room.

The logic behind this push to have health care workers speak Spanish is pretty clear. Imagine you are working in an emergency room and you have a seriously injured accident victim arrive who only speaks Spanish. Not being able to effectively communicate could quite literally be the difference between life and death.

There are a few ways one can go about learning Spanish, such as taking Spanish night classes, for example. However, this option does come with some pretty substantial drawbacks for many people. The time frame for learning Spanish through your typical Spanish class can be rather slow. This is especially true if you are trying to take Spanish on the side while working full time.

Immersion programs have long been popular for those looking to learn a foreign language. The pace can be fast and intense, but so are the results. Those who need to learn Spanish quickly will be well served in considering such a program. Such programs at Spanish schools are a solution for health care workers who are looking to learn the language quickly.

Many people looking to learn Spanish are opting for these types of Spanish immersion programs. Besides learning the language, cultural experiences and activities are an integral part of the course. Such programs are offered in a variety of countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Argentina, Chile or Peru. While Mexico is convenient for North Americans, recent events and security concerns cause many to look further. For example, Mexico’s current crime wave is a sad fact of life. This factor unfortunately makes Mexico less than an ideal spot for traveling students. Due to this factor, many people choosing to learn Spanish abroad are opting for other countries.

Further down in South America, Argentina, Chile and Peru tend to be far safer than Mexico and can be the ideal choice for health care workers. The fact that you can hike the Andes of Chile or dance the tango in a world-class city like Buenos Aires is simply an extra bonus. The cultural perks that go along with an immersion program as you learn Spanish in Argentina, Chile or Peru make your trip most memorable.

In fact, several Spanish language schools have course add-ons to meet the specific needs of health care workers. With a little investigation you can learn Spanish abroad while also conducting role-playing and clinical shadowing. Some study abroad programs also offer instruction geared towards health care workers like the teaching of medical terminology in Spanish. In the case of clinical shadowing, students are assigned to a doctor or nurse and then follow them as they work with a country’s health care system. There are even Spanish immersion programs that allow health care workers to reach out to the community through the means of heath fairs, which provide much needed tests and screenings to impoverished locals in South American.

One recent American student, Lori Hendrickson from Milwaukee, studied Spanish abroad and shadowed in a public health hospital in Buenos Aires. As she was already a nurse, she was able to practice her newly learned Spanish medical terminology with real patients. Hendrickson stated that, “the friendly staff in the E.R. and Obstetrics Unit not only allowed me to participate in direct patient care, but also gave me great insight into the structure of the Argentine health care system.”

Latin Immersion offers clinical shadowing for health care workers at its Spanish immersion schools in Argentina, Chile, and Peru. For more information: Spanish Medical Programs.

Let’s talk about how to buy or choose a learn Spanish course online. In this article, I will provide you with some practical advice on this topic. I will include 3 tips that should help you in your journey to learn this foreign language and select a learn Spanish course online that meets your needs.

1. Decide What Type of Spanish You Want to Learn

There are essentially two types of Spanish that you can learn. One is Castilian or European Spanish, and the other is Latin American. If you will be spending most of your time in Madrid or Barcelona then it makes sense to learn European Spanish. On the other hand, if you expect to be communicating with Mexicans, Dominicans, Colombians, Cubans, etc. then it only makes sense to select a course that teaches the Latin American style of this romance language.

2. Decide What is Your Purpose for Learning the Language

Are you learning for travel or an upcoming vacation? Are you learning to communicate with friends or a significant other? If you are learning for a travel or an upcoming vacation, then it may make sense for you to buy Pimsleur Approach or Fluenz, two excellent courses that will teach you plenty of Spanish designed for the traveler.

However, if you want to learn Spanish because you want to communicate with your new Spanish speaking “novio” or “novia” (boyfriend or girlfriend) who you met online and who you are planning to visit in his or her Spanish speaking country, then you may want a course that teaches familiar or conversational Spanish such as Learning Spanish Like Crazy.

3. What is Your Budget?

There are methods to learn Spanish that will fit anyone’s budget, including free online materials. But you should keep in mind that you may only receive what you pay for. So going the free way may not be the best way.

Alejandra K. Legarda is a freelance Spanish instructor who helped in the development of the Verbarrator. The Verbarrator is the only software specifically designed to help Spanish language learners master conjugating Spanish verbs. If you would like to discover a fast and easy way to learn how to conjugate Spanish verbs and finally speak Spanish fluently, then go download your FREE online demo copy of the Verbarrator right now. Go to: http://www.Verbarrator.com

Can you learn Spanish at home? Many people say that the best way of learning Spanish is to move to Spain or another Spanish-speaking region and living the language for a month or six weeks!

If this really is the best way of learning Spanish then how is it possible to learn Spanish at home effectively?

The answer lies in the approach you use. When you move to a Spanish-speaking region the main benefits are twofold. The first benefit is that you are getting Spanish immersion in real conversations, so you get to understand correct Spanish sentence structure and pronunciation. The second benefit is that you are getting regular, consistent practice.

The trick if you want to learn Spanish at home is that you need to try to simulate both of these benefits in your at home learning approach.

Think about it and both of these benefits are not that difficult to replicate!

Regularity and frequency can be achieved by simply committing to an hour a day of practice. Can you devote an hour a day for about eight weeks? If you can, then you have the ability to learn Spanish at home with the right tools.

You must understand that if you cannot devote an hour a day then the time it will take to learn Spanish at home increases exponentially. The daily reinforcement is key to the process. So do what you can to make sure that you are in a position to devote the time and then you can expect to have the capability to hold decent conversations in about two months.

The first benefit is entirely a personal commitment. Committing to the time investment is something entirely within your own control. Replicating the second benefit requires external resources. The objective is to get simulated immersion in real-life Spanish conversations in the context of the circumstances for which you are learning Spanish.

That is where online Spanish language software comes into the picture. There are immersion software programs which give you guided immersion in real conversations. In some respects this is even better than real-world immersion. It is like having a tutor whispering guidance in your ear as you are getting the immersion in the Spanish language.

Choose wisely, as not all immersion software is created equal, but if you choose wisely then it is entirely possible to learn Spanish at home in as little as two months with a time investment of only an hour a day!
